For the uninitiated, the NHL uses a different system for dealing with ties during the regular season. They go for a 5 minute OT with 3 skaters per side. If still tied, they go for a shootout.
Teams get 2 points for a win (in regulation, OT, or shootout), 1 point if losing a game in OT/shootout, and no points for a loss in regulation. No game ends in a tie.

A record of 5-0-2 is listed in the standings as 7 games played, 5 games won, 0 games lost in regulation, and 2 losses in OT. This team would have 12 points (Minnesota Wild).
The hockey gods are talking to me: I had a dream last night in which I asked Tony Esposito if he'd ever saved a shot of Gretzky's (also in attendance)...he responded he'd retired before 99 was a rookie...(Untrue though, since their careers *did* overlap a handful or so years, so I suspect he did save a dozen or so of 99's shots............................................self: "I must watch more NHL, ommmmmmm ommmmmm ommmmmm...
USA! USA! USA!
...with Tkachuk brothers vs. Maple Leafs in bare-knuckle boxing.
This is a surprising “all star break.” The concept of world hockey tournaments is not new, but this one is. The NHLers have taken this very seriously.
With Canada becoming our 51st state, that will make a super, super team.
I do have one problem, though. What do we do with their beautiful national anthem?
I just had to look it up.
Arizona Anthem
First Stanza
Come to this land of sunshine,
To this land where life is young.
Where the wide, wide world is waiting,
The songs that will now be sung.
Where the golden sun is flaming
Into warm, white shining day.
And the sons of men are blazing
Their priceless right of way.
Chorus
Sing the song that's in your hearts,
Sing of the great Southwest.
Thank God, for Arizona,
In splendid sunshine dressed.
For thy beauty and thy grandeur,
For thy regal robes so sheen,
We hail thee Arizona
Our Goddess and our queen.
You know........that's actually not too bad. But it's also not all that far from 'icky'. And I detect no mention of hockey. None.
But yeah, let's be happy for Canada, since, without this title, they'd have nothing to brag about on the international stage.
The nice thing about last night's game is that I had no rooting choice. Just wanted to see a well-played game and it was.
As for lyrics of state songs, I like the whole wiccan vibe from the Arizona's. Texas's is a bit more in line with the first stanza of Deutschlandlied. If you like it, you'd be lucky enough to sing it at every sporting event.
Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty State!
Texas, our Texas! So wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, Withstanding ev'ry test;
O Empire wide and glorious, You stand supremely blest.
Texas, dear Texas! From tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes! We come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.
Buzz, I was using "international stage" rather generically...(although they may lead the world in lumber exports...
But really, me just being comical, since that's what this site is about (alongside its enjoyments of successful formation and execution of logical sequencings...
Pretty weak apology, hoser. ;)
No need to explain -- you Americans in Canada South (aka upper Midwest) know us pretty well, eh? And you know what they say: the Wikipedia page for National Identity Crisis features a map of Canada.
Took the Rocky Mountaineer from Lake Louise to Vancouver last summer. How many pine trees does Canada have?
@ LumberJack......
That's somewhat ironic -- as just the 'regular' Identity Crisis page has always had a picture of firenze (aka Paul Simon from reports "in the field") - at least last time I looked.
Concerning trees... .....as Denny occasionally reminds us......
"We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?" -- Lee Iacocca
Well, I counted 2,594,345,769 just in British Columbia within 200 yards of the railroad tracks on one side of the train.
I was also impressed that Kamloops had a store called Big Daddy's Liquor. I mean, seeing that sign, you just have to meet Big Daddy.
Love me some Canadian Rockies (as a mountain man, how could I not?), including Kamloops area. Around there, and the Okanagan Valley, is where I've had the most delicious fruit I ever put in my mouth. First time in that area I was astounded at the quantity and quality of the fruit from the multitude of orchards in the vicinity. I literally ate nothing but fruit for 2-3 days: cherries, apricots, peaches, etc. to die for.
Did not try to count the pine trees, but noticed 'several' 😉.
If I ate only fruit for three days, the local sanitation plant would be working overtime.
Moving on.
The finals of the college hockey playoffs were last night. The culmination of the Frozen Four, and an awesome annual event. This year pitted that well-known athlete factory Western Michigan against Boston University. WMU had a late surge (including an empty netter) to pull away for a 6-2 win. The BU fans looked like typical east coasters, and the WMU fans were more like the crowd at a minor league hockey game -- a rowdy, scruffy bunch missing a few of their front teeth.
It's always been a mystery to me how so many tiny schools get into the frozen four on a regular basis. I mean, the mighty Denver University has the most championships with 10, including last year. Minnesota (8) and Michigan (3) have won, and BU has seven trophies, but otherwise it's a stream of tiny schools like Quinnipiac, North Dakota, Union, and Minnesota-Duluth.
All these schools, as it turns out, are well connected to the US Hockey League, an amateur league that is the primary feeder to college teams. There are no baby-faced teens; these are men in their mid- to late twenties. And, shockingly, a huge majority are US born. (There are a lot of Swedes, a couple of Finns, and not much else.)
Great stuff. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Noting an "MA" rating before watching TiVoed hockey match readies one to enjoy the fisticuffs.
In the Frozen Four, there were no fights. It got tense for a moment when about 6 players started shoving each other, but not punches were thrown. In baseball, that would have been called "a brawl."
Speaking of college hockey, I miss the old days, when UW was a absolute powerhouse, RIP Jeff Sauer...but, them lady Badgers annually, repeatedly hold full sway (maybe I need more collegiate girls for fun fun times).

Capitals with first Cup Series win since 2018 Cup, pundits say.
First round: Avalanche/Stars & Panthers/Lightning any potential Cup winner.
I'd totally like to see Kaprisov or Ericcson Ek get a hat trick, but maybe Eichel will instead or also.
How's that possible when Edmonton lost to the Kings in six
Puck drop in little over an hour
I am betting that at least one Canadian team advances to the second round.
Somebody slipped something into Vasilevsky's drink...maybe.
He was off, for sure. The first goal was a crazy eye-high deflection that would have been a nearly impossible stop. The second was another deflection that snuck into the upper corner. But the third goal was a bit sloppy -- he didn't have control of the puck after a save, and the puck was poked in. The Lightning called for a review that failed, resulting in a power play. Panthers scored 14 seconds later.
Vasilevsky had only ten saves on sixteen shots. не хорошо.
Skinner and Pickard is the Oilers cross to bear...and the Wild look ready to challenge.
HUGE comeback win in OT the Oilers.
(Don't turn to ESPN if you want to see detailed highlights of the game. After showing 4 sets of replays and 5 discussion sessions of the Lakers/Minnesota NBA game, SportsCenter allotted 22 seconds of highlights for the Kings/Oilers game.)
Nashville is an average NHL team, but the rest of the teams in the American South are powerhouses...
I've watched most of every game this Stanley Cup...almost all of it's thrilling.
I'm admittedly a few minutes behind live here, since I just saw the Panthers go off at 3:38 to lead.
Doesn't seem like the Kings don't have the Huevos to win the big games.
There's no Messier or Jonathon Quick or Bird, Jordan type player that won't let them lose.
Very disappointing , frustrating, painful. Still driving up to LA today from SD to watch game 5 .
Hopefully the old Yugo will make it.
A newly-led Canadian NHL fan might make noise during opposing team's Star Spangled Banner?
I'm confused. How are these more recent posts jiving with this, from earlier? [disclaimer: I'm not following along daily on this saga]:

It's funny how Crosby's face looks boyishly 25, and Ovechkin's hair looks Merlin-like 55, but both still play like they're the best effing scorers there are RIGHT NOW in Hockey.
